Are Your Windows Sealed Properly?

Are Your Windows Sealed Properly?

It’s a fact that windows are one of the most important design features in your home and can drastically impact its curb appeal. But it’s not just about good looks. The right windows can vastly improve your home’s energy efficiency and save you money in the long run.

There’s been a great deal of advancement in window technology in recent years. Today’s windows are usually double or triple pane and contain a seal around the perimeter which results in an air-tight fit. A gas fill insulation in between the panes of glass locks the gas in creating a barrier that keeps weather out. In other words, you’ll be warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.

So what’s the best way to determine if your windows seals are intact? If there is condensation or fogginess between the glass panes that can’t be wiped off, your seal has deteriorated. You may also see mineral deposits such as dirt and grime that are hard to clean. Window seals can fail for many different reasons. Were they installed properly? Are your windows suited for your environment? Are they over 20 years old? If any of the above describes your situation, it’s time for action.

If you do suspect that your window seals have been compromised, your first step should be to have a specialist check it out. In some circumstances, they can be fixed. However, replacing the window is usually the better option because once the insulating gas has escaped, it cannot be replaced. Plus, with new windows, the energy efficiency of your home will immediately increase resulting in lower energy bills.

If you do invest in new windows, make sure to choose the kind that make the most sense for your climate and come with a warranty.  It’s also very important to work with an experienced specialist from a reputable company that is knowledgeable about the various options.
